What is DBT?

Dialectical behavior therapy in Kansas City, or DBT, is a talk therapy designed to help with emotional regulation. It stemmed from cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy.

Developed in the 1970s, dialectical behavioral therapy was adapted for people with intense emotional experiences. The term dialectical implies combining opposites. So, dialectical behavioral therapy is a way for people to focus on opposite ideas:

  1.  The ideas they have about their lives and their behaviors
  2.  The reality about their lives and behaviors

Combining these two helps people accept reality, identify unhelpful behavior similarly to cognitive behavioral therapy sessions, and learn how to change those behaviors.

While originally prescribed to treat borderline personality disorders, it has successfully made its way into modern substance abuse treatment.

  • Opiates
  • Methamphetamine
  • Alcohol

  • Multiple drugs at once

Iit doesn’t matter if you participate in DBT with residential care, partial hospitalization programs, or outpatient care; you can still reap the benefits if you participate.

With Arista’s DBT drug rehab in Kansas City, you get to work with qualified DBT therapists. During your initial assessment, we will work with you to determine if DBT is a good option for you moving forward in your recovery. If so, you will start your sessions with our on-site therapist weekly.

The length of your Kansas City dialectical behavioral therapy will vary based on the level of care you receive from us. If you are participating in an inpatient program, you’ll likely attend dialectical behavioral therapy for the duration of your stay with us, with sessions multiple times per week. By comparison, if you are participating in a lower level of care like outpatient treatment, you’ll come to our facility or an agreed-upon office for your sessions less frequently, as needed.

What is DBT Used to Treat?

Kansas City DBT has been used to treat:

  • Personality Disorders
  • PTSD
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Eating Disorders
  • Sex Addictions
  • Substance Abuse

When used to treat any of these, Kansas City dialectical behavioral therapy helps you target unhealthy or problematic emotions.

Some people with borderline personality disorders, depression, or substance abuse disorders have negative emotions, and they try to control them. With substance abuse, they might use drugs and alcohol to control intense emotions, only to make them worse.

Kansas City DBT helps you find healthier ways to cope with those intense emotions or recognize harmful emotional patterns that are not founded in reality, rather than returning to drugs and alcohol to try and suppress or control them.

What Does a DBT Session Entail?

With Arista Recovery, we utilize Kansas City dialectical behavioral therapy in addiction treatment to help you focus on your individual behavior and your surroundings. You can expect to develop strategies that help you seek out peer groups and environments that support your sobriety, remove triggers or unhealthy relationships from your daily life, and improve your confidence and self-esteem.

With dialectical behavioral therapy in Kansas City, you’ll start with an assessment. This assessment is different from the intake procedures you might go through at a rehab facility. It’s something you do individually with the DBT therapist.

They will ask you some questions during your assessment and explain how the process works. Every therapist works slightly differently, so this serves an important purpose in explaining what your sessions will look like based on the type of DBT drug rehab in Kansas City that you have.

From there, you’ll start with your individual sessions. Sessions typically last between 40 minutes and 60 minutes. These will likely occur every week, although they can occur more frequently if you are participating in residential care or partial hospitalization treatment.

During that time, your therapist will work with you to create some goals. Goals might include:

  1. Limiting any behaviors that inhibit progress
  2. Helping you address mental health issues or relationship problems that are inhibiting your quality of life
  3. Learning new skills for unhelpful behavior

Over the course of your individual sessions, you’ll likely be asked to keep a diary to keep track of your emotions and actions. This will help you in later sessions to identify patterns in your behaviors. Every time you have a session, you’ll bring this diary and review it so that you and your therapist can determine what areas you want to work on next.

Skills training sessions are usually group-based. This is different from a regular group therapy session where everyone comes together to discuss their problems. Instead, everyone comes together to learn from the therapist in a classroom setting. During your Kansas City DBT skills training, you’ll learn how to enhance your behavior daily. You will typically learn things like:

  • Mindfulness so that you can be fully present in the moment instead of stuck worrying about the future or reflecting on the past
  • Distress tolerance so that you can learn how to manage stressful or difficult emotions without behaving poorly
  • Interpersonal effectiveness so that you can figure out how to establish boundaries, ask for what you want or need, but still respect everyone around you
  • Emotional regulation so that you can be aware of your emotions and have better control over them

This can prepare you for life after rehab, in addition to our discharge planning and alumni programs
