Understanding the condition

What Is Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)?

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a recognized medical condition characterized by an inability to control or stop drinking despite serious consequences to health, relationships, and daily life.

No two experiences with AUD are the same. AUD exists on a spectrum — from mild to severe — and is diagnosed using criteria outlined in the DSM-5.

AUD is not a moral failure or a lack of willpower. It is a chronic brain disorder influenced by genetics, environment, and co-occurring mental health conditions. The good news: it is treatable, and long-term recovery is possible with the right support.

Approximately 29.5 million people ages 12 and older met diagnostic criteria for AUD in the past year — yet fewer than 10% received treatment at a specialty facility.

We’re here to challenge those statistics.

Recognizing the signs

Signs You May Need Alcohol Addiction Treatment

The DSM-5 identifies 11 criteria for AUD. Meeting any two within a 12-month period warrants clinical evaluation. Common signs include:

  • Drinking more, or for longer, than intended
  • Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop
  • Spending significant time drinking, recovering, or craving alcohol
  • Failing to meet responsibilities at work, home, or school because of drinking
  • Continuing to drink even when it causes or worsens depression, anxiety, or physical health problems
  • Giving up activities that were once important in order to drink
  • Needing more alcohol to feel the same effect (tolerance)
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms — shakiness, sweating, nausea, anxiety — when stopping or cutting back

If you or someone you love is experiencing several of these signs, professional evaluation is the right next step. Our admissions team is available 24/7.

Medical safety

Alcohol Detox & Withdrawal:

What to Expect

Alcohol withdrawal is one of the most medically dangerous withdrawal syndromes.

Unlike opioid withdrawal — which is intensely uncomfortable but rarely life-threatening — alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures and delirium tremens (DTs), a potentially fatal complication. Medical supervision is not optional for heavy, prolonged drinkers. It is a clinical necessity.

Why Medical Detox Is Necessary for Alcohol

Attempting to detox from alcohol at home carries serious risk for anyone with a history of heavy daily use.

Medically supervised detox at Arista Recovery — available at our Paola, KS and Hilliard, OH facilities — provides:

01.
Around-the-clock monitoring by licensed nursing staff and our board-certified addictionologist
02.
FDA-approved medications (benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants) to prevent seizures and manage withdrawal symptoms
03.
IV hydration and nutritional support for individuals with compromised physical health
04.
Early identification and treatment of delirium tremens (DTs) if they develop

Common Alcohol Withdrawal Timeline

Our approach

How Arista Recovery Treats Alcohol Addiction

Effective alcohol addiction treatment addresses the whole person — the physiological dependence, the underlying emotional drivers, and the skills needed to sustain recovery in real life.

Arista Recovery’s approach combines evidence-based therapies with holistic and experiential modalities that set us apart from other providers in Kansas, Missouri, and Ohio.

Evidence-Based Therapies

Real recovery, backed in real, scientifically proven approaches:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — identifying and reshaping thought patterns that drive drinking
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) — emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) — building internal motivation for change
  • Trauma-Focused Therapy — addressing trauma as a root driver of alcohol use
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) — naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram to reduce cravings and relapse risk
Holistic & Experiential Modalities

Healing the whole-person, not just the symptoms:

  • Equine-assisted therapy focused on building trust, accountability, and emotional awareness through interaction with horses
  • Horticulture therapy, creating a connection with nature and structured routine as part of the Synergistic Recovery Program
  • Art therapy with a certified art therapist on staff
  • Yoga, meditation, and movement-based therapy
  • Nutritional counseling and chef-prepared meals
Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Many individuals struggling with alcohol use disorder also live with co-occurring mental health challenges, such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma or PTSD
  • Other mental health considers

Arista’s integrated dual diagnosis program treats both simultaneously using a coordinated clinical team. Treating substance use without addressing co-occurring mental health is one of the most common drivers of relapse.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Alcohol Addiction Treatment

1. What are the signs of alcohol use disorder (AUD)?

AUD is diagnosed when a person meets two or more of the 11 DSM-5 criteria within a 12-month period. Common signs include an inability to stop or control drinking, continued use despite health or relationship consequences, withdrawal symptoms when stopping, and needing more alcohol to feel the same effect (tolerance).

If you’re unsure, a brief clinical assessment with our admissions team can provide clarity at no cost.

2. Is medical detox required for alcohol addiction?

Not everyone who stops drinking requires medical detox, but anyone with a pattern of heavy daily drinking should be evaluated by a medical professional before attempting to stop on their own. Alcohol withdrawal carries genuine health risks — including seizures and delirium tremens — that can be life-threatening without proper monitoring. Arista Recovery offers medically supervised detox at our Paola, KS and Hilliard, OH inpatient facilities.

3. What is delirium tremens (DTs) and how is it treated?

Delirium tremens is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal that typically develops 48–72 hours after the last drink. Symptoms include confusion, agitation, hallucinations, fever, and rapid heart rate. DTs can be fatal if untreated.

At Arista Recovery, our medical team monitors all detox clients for early signs of DTs and responds with benzodiazepines, IV fluids, and continuous vital sign monitoring.

4. How long does alcohol rehab take?

The length of treatment varies based on the severity of the addiction, co-occurring conditions, and individual progress. Medical detox typically lasts 5–10 days. Residential inpatient programs run 30, 60, or 90 days. Following inpatient care, many clients step down to PHP or IOP for continued support. Research consistently shows that longer engagement in treatment correlates with better long-term outcomes.

5. What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient alcohol treatment?

Inpatient (residential) treatment involves living at the treatment facility full-time, receiving intensive daily programming in a structured, substance-free environment. It’s best suited for those with severe AUD, unstable home environments, or prior relapse after outpatient care.

Outpatient treatment allows clients to live at home or in sober living while attending scheduled therapy sessions. Our admissions team will recommend the appropriate level based on a clinical assessment.

6. What happens after alcohol detox?

Detox addresses the physical dependence on alcohol — but it is only the first step. Without continued treatment, relapse rates are high. Following detox at our Paola, KS or Hilliard, OH facility, clients typically transition directly into residential inpatient treatment to begin the deeper therapeutic work of recovery: understanding the root causes of their drinking, developing coping skills, and building a life that supports sobriety.

7. Does insurance cover alcohol rehab?

Yes — most commercial insurance plans cover alcohol addiction treatment, including detox, inpatient rehab, and outpatient services, under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). Arista Recovery is in-network with Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, Humana, United Healthcare, and others. Our admissions team verifies benefits before treatment begins. Call (877) 279-0095 or submit your insurance information online.

8. Can I keep working during alcohol treatment?

Inpatient treatment requires a leave from work, typically covered under FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) for eligible employees. Our admissions team can provide documentation to support an FMLA request. If leaving work is not possible, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Overland Park, KS offers scheduling options that allow clients to maintain employment while receiving structured care.

9. How do I help a loved one struggling with alcohol addiction?

Supporting a loved one with AUD can feel helpless — especially when they are not yet ready to seek help. Arista Recovery’s admissions team is available to speak with family members directly, providing guidance on how to approach the conversation, what treatment options are available, and how to prepare. Family involvement is a core part of our program model, and our facilities in Kansas and Ohio both offer family therapy as part of the treatment plan.

10. What makes Arista Recovery different from other alcohol treatment centers?

Arista Recovery offers evidence-based clinical care delivered in a way that feels personal — not institutional. Our board-certified addictionologist oversees all medical detox and MAT. Our licensed therapists specialize in trauma-informed care, CBT, and DBT.

Our experiential programming — equine therapy, horticulture, art therapy, and the Synergistic Recovery Program — provides avenues for healing that go beyond the clinical hour. We are accredited by The Joint Commission and certified by LegitScript, with inpatient facilities in both Kansas and Ohio.
